Jazz-Guitar Great Explores Indian Sounds Posted: 4:51 pm PST March 9,2010 Christened as "a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion" by the New York Times, and dubbed "the Godfather of Fusion" by Down Beat, Larry Coryell is one of the pioneers of jazz-rock. He brought what amounted to a nearly alien sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing in the 1960s, delivering a hard-edged, cutting tone, phrasing and note-bending that owed as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier, smoother bop influences. Early work with drummer Chico Hamilton, flutist Herbie Mann and vibe player Gary Burton paved the way for Coryell's distortion-heavy jazz excursions leading his own trio and the '70s band 11th House. His current project Bombay Jazz features the guitarist teaming with minimalist composer/saxophonist George Brooks (Terry Riley, John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, the Kronos Quartet), Indian bamboo flute master Ronu Majumdar and tabla virtuoso Aditya Kalyanpur to create the finest Indian-inspired jazz and jazz flavored raga. This meeting of world-music visionaries blends the ancient improvisational art of Indian classical music with jazz to create a soul-satisfying sound filled with rich melodies and dynamic rhythms. Bombay Jazz made their debut performance at the Jazz Yatra in Mumbai, India in 2003, receiving critical and popular acclaim. A whirlwind tour of Europe in the fall of 2004 and US performances in 2005 and 2006 solidified the group’s relentless pursuit of compositional and improvisational excellence. Larry Coryell and Bombay Jazz Tuesday-Wednesday, March 9-10, 8pm $18 Yoshi's SF

The Divine One has always and would always be here, but it takes a divine moment and the purest heart, for us to receive Him.I will talk to you about that pious hour at "Brahmamuhurat" when Gurruji, Pt.Ronu Mazumdar made Him visible to us through the enlightened purity of his soul! The dais was meticulously set under the vast expanse of an ancient Banyan tree and time was waiting for the clock to strike 4.30 a.m. On the banks of the Godavari river in Nasik , a crowd of gentle souls had assembled like celestial stars waiting at twilight hours for the New year's dawn to appear. After lighting the "Deep" on stage, Guruji proceeded to enter the ancient prayer hall of my friend's house which was located just behind the stage and which also served as a green room today. The moment Guruji arrived in that house, draped in his mustard yellow "panjabi" and red "dhoti", we knew that the New year's sun was to stir the silence of the dawn with its divine symphony! The strings of the taanpura had already been set, the night before when Guruji sat in the accompaniment of his co-performer Pt.Jayteerth Mevundi whose delicate taankari embellishes the imposing walls of the Kirana gharana! This morning it was time to tune the strings of our inner being to the vibration of the Divine One. Guruji appeared calm but concerned with this gigantic task. After greeting all present, Guruji sat himself amongst us to assume "Dhyana". Firstly Guruji remembered his first guru and a great artist ,his dear father Dr. Bhanu Mazumdar, who left us for heavenly abode last year. With tears in his eyes ,Guruji paid his respects. No sooner that Guruji's eyes shut down in intense concentration, an "adbhut bhav" seeped into the core of our beings. Then a most fascinating trance like expression manifested on Guruji's face. It was an expression laced with a vibrant smile which had the "Tej" of Ma Durga!! Now we knew that the connection had been made and we had been blessed. After this Guruji proceeded towards the prayer hall where he performed the pooja ritual through the rendition of the Hanuman Chalisa. Incidentally when Guruji uttered his first hymn in this prayer house, Pandit Jayteerth had also sounded his first Shadaja(SA) on the stage, totally oblivious of each other. Just then we knew that Panditji's concert and jugalbandi with Guruji would be a divine success, which it was!!

As I know Ronuji, he can light up the sky with his music, his composition, his creation. Apart from this, I want to learn more from him, realising his dream before I can realise mine. Meanwhile I am still chasing his views, living with them and surviving on them.
