Journey

The journey of Ronu Majumdar has been a phenomenal one. Right from his childhood days in Varanasi to his successful life in Mumbai, he has gone through a roller coaster ride in his life. He has been a part of Hollywood, Bollywood, and Indian classical music. Let’s catch a glimpse of bansuri artist Ronu Majumdar journey.

Ronu’s father was a homeopathic doctor by profession & a great oil painter of his time, but he used to play the flute as a hobby. Ronu’s father learned from Late Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, who was the pioneer of flute playing and introduced it into classical music. Ronu’s father was his first guru and later he became the disciple of Late Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao ji, the legendary flautist of all time.

Ronuji’s training in vocal music was done by Pandit Lakshman Prasad JaipurWaale. In 1980, he met Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar Ji in the recording of the famous song “Atha swagatam, shubh swatagtam”, a welcome song composed for Asiad 82. Pandit Ravi Shankar Ji was delighted with Ronu’s musical abilities and he became a part of his orchestras, and popular albums like ‘Chants of India.’ with Gorge Harrison Ex-Beatles, Passages with Philipglass & much more. Since then he also started learning from Pt. Ravi Shankar Ji and it was during this period that Ronu ji’s personality groomed as a professional musician.

Flute artist Ronu Majumdar journey has definitely been an interesting one. He started learning flute at the age of six years and did his first concert, though a small one in New Era High School at the age of thirteen years.

Talking about awards, Ronu ji received his first award in the All India Radio Award was his first recognition, Aditya Vikram Birla Award in the year 1999, Sangeet Natak Academy Award 2014 & Lifetime Achievement Award by Navbharat Times in the hands of Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri. Devendra Phadnavis, Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar, National Kumar Gandharva Award in the year 2006, and Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar in the year 2008. He has also been nominated for the grammy for album ‘Tabula Rasa’ with Bela Fleck & others.

He started his Bollywood journey in the year 1981 with the help of R.D. Burman. Late D.M Tagore, was Ronu Majumdar godfather who took him to R D Burman for whom Pt. Ronu became a part of each and every song till his last breath. He shared a close association with Gulzar, Kishore Da, Asha Bhosale, Khayyam, during his Bollywood journey. He has also performed with Lata Mangeshkar in many memorable songs, Pt. Jasraj, Kishori Amonkar, Kishan Maharaj, Baaba Maal, Shankar Mahadevan, Ustad Sultan Khan, and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. He has also made popular albums “Ethereal Rhythms” and “Heart to Heart” with Zakir Hussain, and much more are to come in Ronu Majumdar journey. He has also been associated with Vishal Bhardwaj for film “Maachis”.

He has worked with Ry Cooder & John Hassels for albums like Fascinoma, Hollow Bamboo, Lady Astride the Tiger, Hollywood movie ‘Primary Colours.’ His other international collaborations include Lary Coryell, Michael Stipe, Robbie Williams, and George Harrison.

Pt. Ronu says, “an artist journey always goes on and he silently prays to Lord Krishna to add sweet melody in his life through his music.”
